The Lost Synagogues is a collection of vibrant paintings depicting synagogues that were eradicated before and during WWII. Andrea Strongwater has researched Jewish communities across Europe to connect archival photos with written records that together tell the story of European Jewish life before the holocaust.  Ms. Strongwater brings this world back to life through her art. You will feel as if you can walk into these buildings, and you will recognize their relations in many of the synagogues we know today.

"The experience of reading Where We Once Gathered: Lost Synagogues of Europe is reminiscent of looking through a cherished family photo album with a grandparent. Andrea Strongwater tells the story of different synagogues through painting and narrative beginning with their creation, through the hopes and values they embodied during their existence, to their final tragic end. Like that grandparent who sits next to you recounting the highlights of each beloved relative's life, Andrea Strongwater communicates through her glorious illustrations and descriptions what ordinary photos cannot convey. This book serves as a reminder of the irreparable communal and architectural losses to the Jewish people and humanity, and is also an historical and artistic treasure which can be shared through generations. Strongwater's work appeals to all ages and belongs in every household and library." Jon Summer

"This is a beautiful book, magnificently researched with amazing artistic renderings of the “Lost Synagogues” of Europe. It is perfect as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah present or hostess gift. Clearly a volume to be treasured and on display on ones coffee table". Dr. Marcia Sachs Littell, Professor, Holocaust & Genocide Studies, The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey

"Lost Synagogues? They are lost only if we forget. How can we even begin to discuss what was lost until we know what was before. Strongwater’s paintings evoke the beauty and vitality of the lost communities of Europe. Just like the 6,000,000 Jews murdered, the synagogues and the communities that they represent must be remembered. Families worked, lived, learned and loved in these diverse places. Blacksmiths and teachers, tailors and doctors, beggars and moguls, mothers, fathers, and children created communities in every sense of that word – communities that centered around the ubiquitous, often imposing (though sometimes humble) structures shown in Where We Once Gathered, Lost Synagogues of Europe." Stephen M. Goldman, Executive Director Holocaust Memorial Center, Zekelman Family Campus

I just love this book, especially as a gift for an adult or child. Wonderful illustrations of synagogues that tell their stories.
