Kelley Cunningham, Highlights High Five’s art director, and I regularly go to the photographer’s studio to direct the photos for our activity pages. Sometimes, the action rhymes are especially challenging. But this month, we were surprised at how easy it was to photograph “Making Faces” (pages 32 and 33). The children loved doing it. We hope your child will, too. This action rhyme can also help your child learn how to play with others. After your child has acted out the rhyme, ask: What kind of face would let someone know that you want to play with him? What kind of face would let someone know that you don’t want to play? What kind of face would show someone that you like what she did? What kind of face would show someone that you don’t like what she did? Then switch roles and have your child tell you what your face shows. Learning to read faces can help your child develop empathy—a key to successful relationships. Have fun making all kinds of faces!
