Reading aloud is one of the best things you can do to help your child learn to read. Children develop larger vocabularies; they begin to learn how print “works”; and they equate reading with pleasure. In fact, researchers have discovered that it’s the positive interaction between you and your child and the printed page that is so important. Our youngest Highlights High Five readers may not be ready to listen to an entire story. That’s OK. Just talking together about the pictures is a great way to start. Older Highlights High Five readers may be able to read some of the magazine on their own. We’re glad of that, because we know that kids need lots of practice reading books and magazines. But they still need you to read with them. You will enrich and extend their understanding as you talk together about what you’re reading. We hope you treasure the time that you spend sharing Highlights High Five with the little ones in your life.
