Children are masters of play. They love it. And it’s important. In fact, developmental psychologists tell us that play is essential; it’s the work of early childhood. It teaches children to reason abstractly, to get along with others, and to think creatively and flexibly. Unfortunately, less and less time is allotted for the kind of free play that once filled the preschool and kindergarten day. But fortunately, children still find ways to engage in imaginative play. This month’s verse, “My Trike” (page 4), captures the thrill and excitement of pretend play. The young girl in this poem imagines multiple possibilities for herself. And isn’t that what we want for all children: to believe that they can reach not just to the moon, but even to the planets? When you hear your child at play, listen carefully. You may be surprised to learn how creative and inventive she can be. And you can rest easy, knowing that she’s doing the most important work of all!
