When I lived in Washington, DC, my home was near the zoo. Admission is free, so I often visited the animals on my daily runs. Grace visits the zoo for the first time in “Grace Says Hello” (pages 24–27). She calls out, she speaks, and she whispers hello to the different animals. Talking to animals—or things—can help children practice their language skills. The animals don’t judge, and children can say what they want again and again until they feel comfortable. This is why some libraries have dogs that children can read to. This month, encourage your child to say hola or hello to a friend or animal friend!
