Los dibujos muestran lo que pasa en un cuento. Ofrecen a los niños el contexto de lo que están leyendo. Cuando miran los dibujos de un cuento antes de leerlo o de escucharlo, ya tienen una idea de lo que va a ocurrir. Este mes, en “Los mitones de los gatitos” (páginas 12 a 15), hay dibujos pero no hay palabras. Pueden usar las ilustraciones para contar el cuento en el idoma materno de su niño. Al contarlo, incluyan muchos detalles, como el nombre de cada gatito o lo que les dice su mamá. Otro día, cuéntenlo en el segundo idioma del niño. ¡Diviértanse leyendo cuentos con y sin palabras! Pictures show us what a story tells us. They give children context for what they’re reading. When children look at pictures before listening to or reading a story, they gain some ideas about what’s going to happen. This month, in “The Kittens’ Mittens” (pages 30 to 33) there are pictures but no words. You and your child can use the illustrations to tell the story in your child’s home language. As you do this, add lots of details, such as the name of each kitten or what Mama is saying to them. Another time, tell the story in your child’s new language.
