Help Us Give Kids Unlimited Access to Books

May 7, 2012

We want our future leaders to have unlimited access to a giant library of books that they can enjoy anywhere, anytime through the web or their tablet devices.  We also want authors and publishers to have the ability to freely bring those books to you.

Over the first year, we've learned a lot about our customers and authors and we need to renovate our product.  We're currently behind the curtain improving the design and flow of our site, building native iPad and Android tablet apps, and improving the content creation process, but we're tight on money and need your help to finish development.

We hope you see our vision and in exchange for helping, we'll reward you.  See below for details.  Anything helps, so please donate even as little as $1 .  The money we raise will help us finish MagicBlox 2.0 and make our library more accessible to kids around the world.

I am a five-year-old yellow English Labrador Retriever and this is my first children's book in a series called, "Read with Max." As you read my story, I'll share my moving adventure with you from my point of view. My book includes many photos of my friends and me during my moving experience. After you finish reading my book, you will know that if I can move, you can move too.

Dogs Work Too Max's Point of View

Did you know that dogs work too? My name is Maximus, but you can call me “Max.” I’m a six-year old yellow English Labrador Retriever and I just went on an adventure. I learned about working dogs, especially Leader Dogs for the Blind. As you read my story, I’ll share my adventure with you from my point of view. If humans can work, then dogs can work too!

Magicblox Gone Mobile

March 11, 2011

Magicblox Gone Mobile

It has been a few months since we started mobile development and thanks to the hard work and dedication of my part time engineering team, Anthony, Leslie, Dean, and Eugenie, we were able to pull off a new HTML5 book reader that works on any Apple or Android device such as the iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Galaxy TAB, Motorola Xoom, Nexus One, and Google TV.

With the iPad 2 being released today, I wanted to let you know where you can get an affordable library of books for your kids. That's right, every book in our library now works on the iPad, and with the horsepower and graphics capabilities of the new iPad2, our books will look even more fabulous than they already are.

The best thing about our new reader is that you don't even have to worry about installing any applications from the app store.  Just open up Magicblox.com, select a book and click Read Me.  The book will just work right from the browser.

This is merely the beginning and a set of base functionality that will enable us to quickly rocket past our previous reader capabilities and support.

Cousins Create Children's Book

Cousins, Diane Eason (author) and Rosemary Sanford (illustrator) combined their love of writing and sketching to create their first children's book, Miss Melody Kitty's Daydream Adventures.  Diane has been involved in children's programs for most of her life.  She has directed children's choirs, musicals, concerts, outreach programs, and more.  Diane is a southern gospel recording artist who has written most of her own songs, as well as poems and Christmas plays.  Her children's song, "It's a Happy Day", is featured in the Miss Melody Kitty's Daydream Adventures ebook on Magicblox.  You can reach Diane at deasonauthor4kids@gmail.com to schedule an author signing of her book.

Rosemary is a self-taught artist who has enjoyed sketching and painting since childhood.  She has spent many hours painting murals and decorating the walls of her church nursery and daycare center.  The cat character of Miss Melody Kitty inspired the creation of her first illustrated children's book, ebook and iPad app.  Melody Kitty for the iPad is an animated storybook app available in the iTunes store at http://ax.itunes.apple.com/us/app/melody-kitty/id389093294?mt=8#ls=1 .  You can reach Rosemary at spirit_designs@msn.com .

Meerkats and Magicblox on Red River Radio Blogcast

January 13, 2011

If everyone in Hollywood has a script, then everyone in Silicon Valley has (or once had) a startup. So when my friend and colleague at Ribbit first told me about his idea for a digital library for kids, I didn’t immediately take him seriously. After all, Jason was just finishing up his MBA, and seemed to have his hands more than full as Ribbit’s director of platform marketing. Plus, Jason has a four-year-old son and is an avid cycler. Now I ask you—does this sound like a man who has a lot of extra time to start a company?

Fortunately for untold numbers of toddlers and their parents, Jason Lane made the time to make Magicblox a reality. And fortunately for me, Meerkat's Safari became the very first book featured in the Magicblox library.

Since launching Magicblox last August, Jason has added at least 50 more books to his digital shelves, and—wait for it—is actually cutting monthly checks to authors based on subscriber book reads. He’s also cutting deals with traditional publishers like Little Pickle Press, and working his programming magic to make children’s books like mine viewable on iPhones and iPads.

Want to hear more about Jason’s story and get a refreshing dose of optimism and good heartedness from an inspiring entrepreneur? Listen to Jason (and yours truly! I’ve been invited as a guest) interviewed live on Red River Radio next Tuesday, January 18, at 10am PST.
