Help Us Give Kids Unlimited Access to Books

May 7, 2012

We want our future leaders to have unlimited access to a giant library of books that they can enjoy anywhere, anytime through the web or their tablet devices.  We also want authors and publishers to have the ability to freely bring those books to you.

Over the first year, we've learned a lot about our customers and authors and we need to renovate our product.  We're currently behind the curtain improving the design and flow of our site, building native iPad and Android tablet apps, and improving the content creation process, but we're tight on money and need your help to finish development.

We hope you see our vision and in exchange for helping, we'll reward you.  See below for details.  Anything helps, so please donate even as little as $1 .  The money we raise will help us finish MagicBlox 2.0 and make our library more accessible to kids around the world.

Meet Concetta Payne

Concetta M. Payne

Biography

I was born in Queens, NY and grew up in Lodi, N.J. Currently I live in Pocono Summit, PA with my loving husband George. I have three grown children a son and two daughters along with my extended family of three grown step-sons.

God has blessed me with twelve grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Two of my youngest grandchildren inspired me to write my children’s story.  While playing with my grandson Justin and his racing game, I thought it would be more fun if all the racing cars had names. My broad imagination along with my grandson’s suggestions made my dream become a reality. The exuberant reaction from my granddaughter Angie Bella brought joy to my heart. My most precious moments are spent reading to children, especially my grandchildren, whether it is a bedtime story or just fun leisure time reading.

At present, I have three children’s books published “BoBo the Race Car”, “BoBo Races on the Tricky Triangle” and my new release “Bess the Book Bus” co-authored by Freda Roberts. First, may I tell you a little about my BoBo series? Most of us are aware that Pocono, PA is internationally known for NASCAR Racing. I thought it would be a wonderful gesture to send complimentary books to Dr. Joseph Mattioli, the founder and owner of the Pocono Raceway. I was honored when Dr. Mattioli offered to endorse my BoBo books. For the last two years I have been invited, as their guest, and participated during their Kid’s Day and the Pocono 500 races. It was a thrilling experience to be given the opportunity to display and offer my books to their racing fans. My third in a series “BoBo’s New Challenge…Spike” is ready to be submitted. I’m sure you will find my stories are inspirational, and have valuable messages concerning the true meaning of friendship and determination.

Here are a few facts about Bess the Book Bus, and why this story is so dear to my heart. Bess the Book Bus is not a passenger bus. She is a very special bus stacked with children’s books. Her owner and driver Jennifer E Frances, from Tampa Fl, travels state to state delivering free books to the underprivileged children. I am a dedicated supporter of Jennifer’s literacy organization, so with Jennifer’s endorsement our book was created. Back in 2009 the Ford Motor Company presented Jennifer with a new Ford Transit Connect filled with children’s books which kept Bess rolling. I was privileged to have the Ford Motor Company’s authorization to use a picture of the vehicle and the Ford Emblem within the book’s pages. I am proud to say, that a portion of the proceeds from the Bess books benefit Jennifer’s worthy cause.

There are many challenges in the publishing industry, especially for the self-publishing authors. Having one’s book published is just the beginning of a 24/7 task. Even though we have exclusive rights to our books the marketing strategies become exhausting. It is very difficult to get the recognition your book(s) truly deserve. That is one reason why I also support a fun and informative website… Magicblox!  A website where authors can display their book(s) and parents, grandparents etc. can enjoy reading wonderful and educational stories to their little ones. All of us need to be aware of the importance of reading to our children. Thank you Magicblox for all your efforts on a job well done!  I wish you much continued success!

I will continue to PERSEVERE, a powerful word that has brought me to this point in my life. Anything is possible when you believe in it!

Warmest regards,

Concetta M Payne

Let me introduce myself

February 25, 2011

shoo raynerHi, I'm Shoo Rayner and I'm very pleased to have three titles on MagicBlox, The Ginger Ninja, which has been a great seller for me in the UK, Noah's ABC and My First Picture Joke Book which have both sold in large numbers over the world.

I've been writing and illustrating Children's Books in the UK for about twenty Three years now. I'v had a hand in about 250 books now. I wrote about 160 of them.

I've been working on presenting my books online for years now, but have never quite got it right. I always knew that something like MagicBlox would come along, I just got a bit bored and frustrated, waiting for the moment and for the technology to catch up with what I knew was possible. So it's great to finally be able to present my work how I always knew it could be done.

I hope you'll keep looking out for my books and I'll look forward to posting many more in future.

You can check out my extensive website and online drawing school at www.shoorayner.com

Self-Published Women Unite

January 31, 2011

A few months ago I met a fantastic woman and children’s book author, Annamaria Farbizio. She writes a column for BellaOnline, a support forum for women writers. When I first met Annamaria I was struck by her generosity. Here was a woman who, like me, was actively promoting her children’s books on Magicblox.com. But instead of seeing me as a competitor, she saw me as a kindred spirit–a fellow writer, self-publisher, and enterprising gal.

She emailed me introducing herself and asked if she could interview me for her Writing for Children column. I literally had never met someone over the age of 3 who was more excited about my book.

Annamaria has several children’s books of her own, including a peaceful and uplifting book called The Snowman’s Song. Her interview with me was posted today on BellaOnline, but you can also read it here below. Thanks, Annamaria. I feel almost famous!

Interview with Self-Publisher Claudia Graziano (courtesy of BellaOnline.com)

When I joined Magicblox.com in November last year I had no idea that one of the side benefits would be to meet other authors who are on the same journey of writing, publishing, and marketing children’s picture books. I started to read other books on the site and came across a book I fell in love with: Meerkat’s Safari. When I contacted the author she graciously provided me with an interview and I was startled by the similar paths we had taken. She revealed some of the horror stories she had with distribution. I related to those stories since I’ve had many of those same challenges. My interview questions and Claudia’s answers follow:

How did you get the idea for Meerkat’s Safari?
I had a wonderfully creative boyfriend years ago, Dan Sweeney, who suggested we write a children’s book together. The first draft of the book was called “Whose Tracks Are These?” and featured illustrations made out of torn construction paper. This was so long ago I remember we actually went to the library to research animal behaviors. After coming up with two or three rhymes (and both getting jobs) we abandoned the project. But I found printouts of our manuscript years later in an old file box, and I decided to do something with it.

Why did you decide to self-publish?
At the time, self-publishing seemed to me the most direct route to getting what I wanted, which was a beautiful, hardbound, finished book. One of the biggest hurdles to finding a publisher was that the book was already attached to an illustrator—something I now know publishers don’t like. What I learned from my experience was that publishers often have their own illustrators in mind, and are really just looking for a marketable story. The other hurdle was that, of the few agents and publishers I contacted, almost all of them wanted to change the concept in one way or another. One agent who expressed interest said that the animals I wrote about were too scary for young children, and that I should develop the book around farm animals instead. I had to laugh at that one.

Are you happy with your decision?
I’m extremely happy with the book itself—I think the quality is very high, and I’m happy that it reflects both Michelle’s and my creative vision 100%. But I learned a lot of valuable lessons of what NOT to do when self publishing. The easy part is producing (writing, illustrating, and printing) your book. The hardest part is actually marketing and distribution. The industry is so controlled by large publishers that it is extremely difficult to make it into traditional channels—especially with just one title and a limited budget. The good news is that I think the industry is rapidly changing. Social marketing, blogging, and Internet sales have really given self-publishers a more competitive way to market and promote their books.

Are you happy with the final illustration results?
The illustration process itself took two years. But I couldn’t be happier with the final results, and if I were to write a second children’s book Michelle would be the obvious first choice. I think the fanciful way she interpreted the story and her attention to detail literally made the book.

What was the most difficult part of creating your book? What part did you enjoy the most?
I think for most writers, the most enjoyable part of the book creation process is seeing someone else really enjoy reading your work. I remember seeing the first child to actually read my book. She put her hand over her mouth in surprise and glee whenever the clue was revealed in the next animal spread. It was a thrilling experience for me to see her reactions.

Distribution for me was the most difficult and discouraging part of the process. I lost a lot of money trying to take my book through traditional channels, and signed contracts I didn’t really understand. Yes, I got my book into national chains but I ultimately lost money because there wasn’t a national marketing campaign to support those books. And so they were returned to the distributor for full credit. I asked the distributor if I could get these returned copies back so that I could donate them to charities, and even offered to pay for the shipping. Of course, the distributor said no, that those copies were “non-salable” and had to be destroyed. In fact, those copies were remaindered. I see them for sale all the time on Amazon.com.

What publicity techniques have worked the best for your business?
Far and away, the best publicity technique for me has been networking and word of mouth. The more people who know about your book, and who know you personally, the more copies you are going to sell. I also had tremendous success early on marketing to zoos. It’s very tough to get in, since most zoos outsource their gift shops to large corporations, but if you can get in with a book reading event, it can be very lucrative.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned as a self-publisher?
Before you ever get to actually writing and illustrating your book, make sure you have a marketing plan in place. Get reviews BEFORE you go to press. Don’t be afraid to go to book stores and gift shops personally and try to get featured prominently as a “Local Author.”

What were your favorite picture books or Young Adult books as a child?
A book I remember fondly is the Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast. It was about insects and animals getting dressed up to go to a Victorian-style party. I can remember not really understanding it, but loving the rhymes and lush illustrations.

New Book - The Snowman's Song, A Christmas Story

December 18, 2010

The Snowman's Song, A Christmas Story

We are very excited to have this award winning book in our library. It has even sold over 36,000 copies in retail stores.

Witness a miracle this Christmas... A forlorn little snowman hopes, prays and yearns with all his heart for a beautiful melodic voice so he can rejoice by singing Christmas carols just like human children do. There is little hope that he will ever have a voice, because the snow world is quiet and snowpeople communicate by sensing thoughts and feelings that travel as ice droplets in the swirling cold winter air. But when a cheery red cardinal renews his hope and a kind young girl brings him a gift, a Christmas miracle happens and the little snowman realizes his longed-for dream in a powerful, joyful, unexpected way.
